Must-See Things to Experience in Kefalonia


  • Visit Myrtos Beach, one of the most photographed spots in Greece, with its dramatic cliffs and gorgeous blue water. 
  • Take some time to explore Melissani Cave, where sunlight streams through the roof opening and lights up the water in a way that feels completely unreal.
  • Spend time in beautiful Assos, a small, colourful village that was built on a narrow peninsula with a relaxed, easy-going atmosphere.
  • Take a boat trip from Fiskardo, one of the few places that was untouched by the 1953 earthquake, and enjoy the charming buildings and clear water.
  • Drive across the island to Petani Beach on the west coast for a quieter alternative with equally impressive scenery.

What to Eat & Drink While You’re in Kefalonia

Food in Kefalonia is made up of fresh ingredients and a ton of local tradition. You’ll come across delicious dishes like kreatopita (a rich meat pie), fresh seafood straight from the sea, and grilled meats that have been simply seasoned with fresh herbs and olive oil.

Local wines are also worth trying, especially Robola, which is a crisp white wine that is grown on the island’s slopes. Meals tend to be simple but full of flavour, and are often enjoyed in the numerous small tavernas that overlook the water or are tucked into the quaint village squares. If you’re exploring Kefalonia villas, the amazing food and beautiful settings tend to go hand in hand.

Kefalonia Transportation

Direct flights

There are direct flights to Kefalonia from several of the UK airports, with airlines like Jet2, TUI, easyJet and British Airways offering seasonal routes. The flight time here is around three and a half hours.

Via Athens

You can also travel via Athens, either by a short domestic flight or by ferry. Ferries run from the mainland (such as in Kyllini) and take around 1–1.5 hours, with additional connections between Kefalonia and the other nearby Ionian islands.

Hiring a car

Once you’re on the island, hiring a car is definitely the best way to get around. Kefalonia’s size and landscape make it a lot easier to explore the many beaches, villages and must-see viewpoints with your own transport. Buses run between the major towns, but services are limited in some of the more remote areas.
